Every week, camp counselor Amy Tschida watches over dozens of kids as they climb on the playground at Northwoods Park.

“These kids learn to take turns on a playground, they learn to share, they learn a lot of life lessons,” she said.

But unfortunately, not everyone can enjoy the bridge, swings and slides. It’s not accessible to those with disabilities. “It’d be nice to have that access for them as well,” she said.

By fall, they will. The City of Brooklyn Park was already planning to tear down the existing playground and build a new one.

“So we thought, ‘Why not make it an all-inclusive playground for everybody?” said Jon Oyanagi, Director of Recreation and Parks for Brooklyn Park.

The current playground has narrow passages and steps, which are not ideal for anyone with disabilities. But the new playground will be entirely handicapped accessible.

“It will have an artificial turf base instead of sand or pea gravel or woodchips that you see on normal playgrounds,” said Oyanagi.

Brooklyn Park officials hope the new design also makes it easier for parents and grandparents to join in the fun.

“All can come and enjoy this park and especially this playground,” he said.

Amy agrees. She says it will send an important message to her community and be a huge hit with her camp kids. “It shows that we are all about inclusion and that we are willing to go that extra mile to make sure that everyone is having fun.”

Construction for the new playground will likely begin in early September and take about a month to complete.

The total cost will be about $350,000. The city is paying for the playground with grant money, and city and state funds.
