In keeping with the vision of the Parks and Recreation Open Space Master Plan; the Deer Park City Council approved the funding to create a new park located at 4215 Alta Lane to be known as Cottonwood Park. This new park would include playground pieces from the May Recreation and Miracle Playgrounds, a shade structure, benches, and an all concrete walking trail.
In accordance with the City of Deer Park’s park dedication policy, the City acquired a track of land located at the corner of Aspen Drive and Alta Lane. Located in the Cottonwood Estates subdivision, this track of land would become Deer Park’s new public park, Cottonwood Park!

In late April of 2017, May Recreation began construction of the new multi-feature play structures meet all consumer safety standards and designed for children ages 5-12 years.

The new neighborhood play structure is by far the City of Deer Park’s largest playground in terms of size. The playground includes components such 2 Megatowers®, the Gravity Rail, a Viper,7 slides including 3 tube slides, rock wall, activity panels, ADA access platform, Biba mobile game system, and various climbing features. There is no shortage of activities for children to jump, crawl, walk, and slide throughout the new structure.

The playground structure has some of the most unique features of any playground in the area. Inspired by the excitement of roller coasters, the Gravity Rail lets kids safely cruise through the air, over dips and around curves with ease. The Viper is a giant in-line rope swing designed for a single or multi-user experience. It combines balancing, swinging and rocking movements with play interaction. Biba is a mobile game system that blends the digital play that kids love with the active outdoor play and joyful imaginative fun that parents remember from their own childhood.

In addition to the playground, the park features a variety of other amenities for the community to enjoy. Cottonwood Park features an 820 foot long concreate loop walking trail. The trail will also take park patrons by a new hexagon shade structure. The shade structure features stone accented columns and has a picnic table for use during birthday parties or just enjoying the park. Benches are also spread out across the park to all for the community to sit and enjoy the open green space.

On Earth Day of 2017, the Parks and Recreation department partnered with Calpine to assist in the planting of 6l trees around the park property. The Parks and Recreation Department in addition planted several ornamental and shade trees and laid several pallets of sod. In total, the park features 31 new trees, bushes, and bamboo. Once fully grown these trees and plants will make for a dynamic landscape around the park.

Construction of the park was completed on August 14. Deer Park City Council along with the Parks and Recreation Commission are excited to now offer this new and improved neighborhood playground— located on 4215 Alta Lane —to the citizens of Deer Park.
